Yesterday, on that wonderful, surprisingly warm Friday afternoon, which is unheard of here in Rexburg especially in February, my best friend and I got on the topic of the Gospel starting with the mind blowing, impossible answer to comprehend of how Heavenly Father became who He is today. He had to have had parents of his own right? But how did his parents become human beings? How and when did all of this begin? We were squealing at the though that our minds could not comprehend the reality of how everything, the Earth, Heavenly Father, human well-being had began. This then led to talking about agency and how we are here on this Earth to one day become Gods ourselves.
2 Nephi 2:27 says that men are free to choose, whether that be liberty, eternal life, captivity or death. These last two semesters here at school, I have learned more about agency than ever before. Something that I learned for myself fall semester was the fact that I felt like I had the wrong perspective of the Gospel up until now. Don't get me wrong, my parents taught me well and I attended church up until I left for college (I still attend church here too Mom, don't worry). But, honestly, I always thought there was only one standard for the church and you must abide by those exact rules or else. But, the Gospel is so personal. In the Gospel there are principle and truths that are taught, but we must base our lives and live personally off of those truths. What matters the most if our relationship with our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. His plan has blessed us with the free will to choose for ourselves. Everyone and anyone gets the privilege to choose our career, who we want to marry, what we want to do with our lives. For my personality, I would much rather have someone tell me what to do, where I am suppose to go to school, who I am going to marry, and where I will end up heading with my career. But then I realized, that isn't the plan of salvation. Satan's plan was to choose for us, to take away our agency. What fun would that be? What if Satan won, in the war in heaven, and he chose every single decision for us? What if we didn't like any of the decisions that were made for us?
The truth that I have learned these past couple of semesters is the fact that we are free to choose for ourselves. Sometimes it drives me crazy, but I'm so grateful to choose. I know that when we make a decision in our lives, we have taken it to the Lord in prayer and find peace and comfort with this decision, I assure those who are skeptical that they didn't get an answer from Heavenly Father, He is pleased with your decision. Heavenly Father will not let you make the wrong decision for too long without interfering in your life with a sign or an answer, indicating that whatever you're doing with your life is not what He has planned for you.
The Spirit works in wondrous ways, as this truth was testified to me as I was scrolling through Facebook and I came across a picture that said:
And then! Al Fox's (tattooed Mormon) blog post from yesterday had been shared. And she talked about making choices for ourselves. She says, "Happiness and unhappiness exists in the same exact place at the same time through different people. Its true, life is what you make it. Or it could be what we allow God to make of it for us. What will you choose? Choose happiness. And to choose happiness is to choose God. Choose to keep going. Choose to trust. Choose to have faith. To keep you hope. And choose to receive the unexpected, but profoundly greater path with the best blessings. I promise, you'll be alright." I cannot express how grateful I am to be able to choose for myself. I have known people who have brought a decision to Heavenly Father and they felt like they haven't gotten any sort of answer. But everyone is different and based on how one receives their own revelation/answers is personal to themselves. I am positive that if our hearts are set upon pleasing God and making the right decision in righteousness, keeping Him in mind, Heavenly Father is pleased with us and trusts us to make our own decisions because this is our life.
